Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--A new German offshore windfarm capable of powering up to 400,000 homes has started supplying its first electricity to the grid.
The DanTysk windfarm is located 70 kilometers (km) west of the island of Sylt in the German North Sea. Industrial Info reported in September that the last of its 80 turbines had been installed at the site, just five months after the first one went in. For additional information, see September 8, 2014, article - Final Turbines In At DanTysk Offshore Windfarm.
According to developer, Vattenfall AB (Stockholm, Sweden) the turbines will now be commissioned one at a time, with all 80 operational in early 2015. The windfarm, which covers an area of 70 square kilometers in the German Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) on the border of Danish territorial waters, has a generating capacity of 288-megawatts (MW). It uses 3.6 MW turbines from Siemens Energy (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany).
"DanTysk is a major and extremely complex project which will make a significant contribution to the use of renewable energy in the German power grid," commented . Magnus Hall, chief executive officer of Vattenfall. "The outlook for wind power in Europe is very positive and Vattenfall will invest around 1.2 billion ($1.5 billion) in wind projects over the next four years. Today, it is cheaper to construct onshore wind farms but costs for building offshore wind farms have fallen considerably. Renewables will be Vattenfall's core business."
Christian Vogt, head of Corporate Investment Management at Stadtwerke München, said: "With the feed in of the first electricity we reach another significant milestone. The production of renewable energy has now begun at DanTysk and offshore wind energy has become reality. Several years of planning and construction are proven successful."
DanTysk is owned jointly by Vattenfall (51%) and German municipal utility company, Stadtwerke Munchen GmBH (SWM) (Munich) (49%). The partners are also working together on their second offshore windfarm in the German North Sea, the 288-MW Sandbank project, located northwest of DanTysk. In August, the firms committed to spending 1.2 billion ($1.6 billion) on the project.
