First Solar Constructs Sempra's Solar Power Plant in Nevada

Researched by Industrial Information Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Construction started this summer on Sempra Generation's (San Diego, California) El Dorado solar power plant near Boulder City, Nevada. Sempra Generation is a subsidiary of Sempra Energy (NYSE:SRE) (San Diego, California).

First Solar Incorporated (Tempe, Arizona) was awarded the turnkey contract to design, engineer and construct the 10-megawatt (MW) solar power plant, utilizing photovoltaic solar cells to convert sunlight into electricity. The solar-manufacturing company will also be providing maintenance service for the plant over its lifetime. Sempra Generation will own and operate the facility once it is complete in December 2008.

The plant is situated adjacent to Sempra's existing 520-MW gas-fired combined-cycle El Dorado plant, which became operational in 2000. Sempra will be using the existing infrastructure and transmission interconnection for the solar station to cut costs and construction time.
