First Unit of Largest Pumped-Storage Power Station in Anhui Begins Operation

Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--The first unit of State Grid Xin Yuan Holding Company Limited's (Beijing) Xiangshuijian pumped-storage power station was successfully connected to the grid and started the commissioning process in Central China's Anhui province on October 27.

Xiangshuijian pumped-storage power station has a total planned capacity of 1,000 megawatts (MW) with four 250-MW units. The facility is the largest pumped-storage power station for both single-unit capacity and total capacity in the Anhui province. The project is located in the load center of South Anhui in Eling Town of Sanshan District in Wuhu City, which has an excellent geographic position and favorable geological conditions, representing one of the best natural sites for pump-storage power development in East China.

The power station is mainly comprised of the upper and lower reservoirs, the water transmission system, an underground powerhouse and a surface switchyard connected to the China Eastern Power Grid via 500-kilovolt transmission lines. The upper reservoir includes a 89.5-meter-high concrete face rockfill dam with a total storage of 17.48 million cubic meters under normal level of 222 meters above sea level. The lower reservoir includes a 21.5-meter-high main dam with a total storage of 14.35 million cubic meters at 14.6 meters above sea level.

Construction of the project began in December 2006. Following the commissioning of the first unit in October 2011, all four units are expected to begin operation by the end of 2012. Upon completion, the project will take over the duties such as peak regulation and power backup for the China Eastern Power Grid.
