Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--India has an ambitious target of adding 500 gigawatts (GW) of renewables in its power mix by 2030. Along with ground-mounted solar and wind, floating solar (in bodies of water) possesses serious potential to help the country meet this goal. It is estimated that India has floating solar potential of about 300 GW.
Ground-mounted solar projects need more than four to five times the land of traditional power generation facilities. Development of floating solar is relatively less complex as the water bodies used for solar power development are mostly either owned by the electric utility companies or by government bodies. To meet India's commitment at the COP 26 Climate Change Conference of achieving net zero emissions by 2070, India needs to tap its floating solar potential, and in recent times, utilities have come forward regarding development of floating solar power projects in the country.
Industrial Info is tracking floating solar projects worth more than US$2.5 billion in India. Examples of projects include NHPC Limited's (Faridabad, India) floating solar facility in Rengali, Odisha, construction of which is scheduled to start in the coming months.
