Researched by Industrial Info Resources India (Delhi, India)-- Moving ahead with its aggressive diversification plans, India's largest hydropower generation firm, NHPC Limited (BSE: 533098) (Faridabad, Haryana), has initiated the process of developing grid-connected solar power projects in the south-Indian state of Kerala. In this regard, the public sector company has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Kerala owned Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) (Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala).
The hydropower major will build a 50-megawatt (MW) plant in the first phase. The financial details of the project are yet to be revealed by the company. NHPC, in January 2014, signed another MoU with KSEB for making its foray into wind energy generation. According to that agreement between, NHPC proposed to set up wind farms of total 82 MW capacity in the Palakkad district of the state.
The company also plans to develop a 50 MW solar power capacity in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The company had inked an agreement with Uttar Pradesh New & Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) (Lucknow) and the Department of Additional Sources of Energy, Government of Uttar Pradesh, in August 2013 for the implementation of the project.
NHPC is the largest hydropower development firm in India, with capabilities to undertake all the activities from concept to commissioning of hydro power projects. The company has an installed capacity of 5,702 MW from 17 hydropower stations in different parts of India. The hydropower firm is also engaged in the construction of seven projects aggregating to a total installed capacity of 4,095 MW.
NHPC has ambitious capacity-addition plans for the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2017-22). During the period, it plans to construct 13 hydroelectric projects, with a cumulative capacity of about 12,411 MW. If all these projects are completed on time along with the ongoing ones, NHPC's power generation portfolio will reach close to 25,000 MW by 2022.
