Foster Wheeler Bags Vietnamese 1,000-Megawatt Circulating Fluidized Bed Generator Contract

Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In September 2011, Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) awarded a $1.27 billion engineering, procurement and construction contract to Hyundai Engineering and Construction (KRX:000720) (HDEC) (Ulsan,South Korea) to build the 1,000-megawatt (MW) base plant for the Mong Duong 1 thermal power plant project.

At the beginning of 2012, HDEC awarded a contract to Foster Wheeler AG (NASDAQ:FWLT) (Geneva, Switzerland) for the design and supply of 1,000-MW circulating fluidized bed (CFB) steam generators for the coal-fired plant. EVN is the owner and developer of the project, which is being financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and South Korea's Exim Bank.

The CFB steam generators will be designed to burn Vietnamese anthracite coal and will meet the necessary environmental regulatory requirements. The plant will consume about 3 million tons of coal per year.

The power plant site covers an area of 55 hectares in zone 3, Mong Duong ward, Cam Pha town in the northern Vietnamese province of Quang Ninh. Power from the plant will be fed to the national grid through a double-circuit, 500-kilovolt (kV) line and a 500-kV substation. The first generator is scheduled for operation in the first quarter of 2015, and the second in the third quarter of that year.

The Mong Duong thermal plant is a mine-mouth project and constitutes Phase I of an overall project plan that, when completed, will have an installed capacity of 2,200 MW from two units and is part of the national electricity development scheme for 2006-15.
