Four Transmission Projects Worth $1.5 Billion to Upgrade New England Power Grid

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--With an estimated cost of $1.5 billion, a group of planners from Northeast Utilities (Hartford, Connecticut), National Grid (Westborough, Massachusetts) and ISO New England, serving Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont, are developing New England East-West Solutions (NEEWS), an analysis of four high-voltage transmission line projects in New England states. NEEWS addresses reliability needs and ways to upgrade in order to improve the performance of the transmission system.

The four projects are:
  • The Interstate Reliability Project: a 41-mile, 345-kilovolt (kV) high-voltage overhead transmission line that runs from Connecticut to the Rhode Island border with three substations upgrade along the way
  • The Greater Springfield Project: a 35-mile, 345-kV overhead transmission line and 59 miles of 115-kV line running from Connecticut to Massachusetts with one substation upgrade in Connecticut and one new substation in Massachusetts
  • The Central Connecticut Project: a 37-mile, 345-kV high-voltage transmission line from Bloomfield to Watertown with three substation upgrades
  • The Rhode Island Project: a 345-kV transmission line from North Smithfield to Warwick
Burns & McDonnell (Kansas City, Missouri) is providing engineering services for the projects. Construction is planned between 2010 and 2012 with completion expected by 2014.
