Fuel Ethanol Plant in Peru Becomes Operational

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A new fuel ethanol plant became operational in the city of Sullana, Piura, in northwestern Peru in September 2009. The facility is owned by the company Agricola del Chira SA (Lima, Peru), which is a subsidiary of Grupo Romero (Lima), a Peruvian business group. The feedstock used is sugarcane.

The construction of the plant was performed in 20 months, starting in early 2008. The company hired the Brazilian engineering company Uni-Systems do Brasil Ltda. (Sertaozinho) to perform the engineering and procurement, manage the construction, and provide some equipment. Agricola del Chira SA invested approximately $130 million in the development of the project. The plant is designed to process 4,000 tons of sugarcane per day, which results in 1.32 million tons per year, to yield 350,000 liters of fuel ethanol daily. Electric power is generated out of bagasse burning as well; the installed capacity is 12 megawatts, which is used to power the plant's operations. The remaining energy is sold to the grid. Sugar will not yet be produced.
