The following is an advisory by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources Inc.; Houston, Tx). General Motors Corporation (Detroit, MI) (NYSE: GM) has named Arcadis-Giffels (Arnhem, Netherlands) at the design and engineering firm for the project and The Washington Group (Buffalo, NY) as the general contractor for construction of a $500 million engine plant to be built in Tonawanda, N.Y.
Site preparation for the 650,000 square foot plant began in August and is expected to be complete and online by early 2003. The new plant will produce 1.8 million 6-cylinder inline engines for GM's 2004 model vehicles.
General Motors is the largest automotive manufacturer in the world. The Tonawanda site was commissioned in 1938, and last year made approximately 1.86 million engines and employed 4,000 people.
