Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Power Plant, which is located in Baxley, Georgia, shut down its 876-megawatt (MW) Unit 1 on Monday afternoon to repair a safety relief valve. The station is owned by Georgia Power Company, a subsidiary of Southern Company (NYSE:SO) (Atlanta, Georgia).

Plant officials investigated the problem before the unit was taken offline. Sources said they hope for a brief turnaround. They estimate the unit will be returned online by Friday, April 3, if there are no delays.

The Hatch station has two generating units with a total capacity of 1,749 MW. Unit 2 remains online, generating at full load.
