Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--German public utility company Stadtwerke Duesseldorf AG (Dusseldorf, Germany) is in the process of selecting a project developer for a planned natural gas-fired combined-cycle power station. The new utility, "Block C," which will be built at the existing Lausward power plant site, will have an energy output of 420 megawatts (MW) and will cost more than 355 million euros ($457 million). The Lausward power station began operations in 1957 and is providing up to 520 MW of electricity and 330 MW of heat to the city of Dusseldorf.
Stadtwerke Duesseldorf currently generates 40% of the city's energy demand and aims to avoid energy imports by constructing the power station. Investment decisions will be made at the beginning of 2011. The new gas-fired block should be operational by the end of 2014.
As an alternative, the public utility company had plans for a 400-MW coal-fired block at the same site. The Lausward power station was formerly constructed as a coal-fired power station and still has a convenient infrastructure for coal storage and transportation. The company initially decided to move forward with the coal-fired facility, but the project had to be cancelled because of strong resistance in the community and from the government, which holds a 25.05% stake in the utility.
Stadtwerke Duesseldorf also operates the 55-MW Flingern waste-to-energy plant, as well as various smaller wind turbines, biogas-fired plants and geothermal plants to provide heat.
