Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Giant Cement Company Holding Incorporated (Summerville, South Carolina), a subsidiary of Cementos Portland SA (Pamplona, Spain), is progressing with construction of a $100 million new kiln line at its Harleyville, South Carolina cement plant (Plant 1514644). The Industrial Company (TIC - Steamboat Springs, Colorado) was awarded the general construction contract and has mobilized on site in June of this year. See archived IIR industry Alert:Giant Cement Selects General Contractor for Plant Expansion for details.
Brad Suter is acting as project manager for TIC at the onsite office (803-496-9336). TIC is planning on self performing the majority of the mechanical and electrical work for the project, including installation and fabrication of the raw mill, finish mill, cyclones, preheater, and stack. The installation of the friction drive kiln will be bid out within a month. Installation of the first section of the kiln is scheduled for November 2003. TIC will also subcontract out other specialty items such as electrical trip setting for the transformers, insulation, and coating services. Completion of the expansion is scheduled for late 2004.
Watkins Engineers & Constructors (Tallahassee, Florida) is the engineering company of record, but since the last report has been acquired by Fru-Con Construction Corporation (Baldwin, Missouri). Fru-Con has closed down the Tallahassee office, but has maintained some Watkins employees to help with completion the Harleyville expansion.
