Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking nearly $70 billion worth of Industrial Manufacturing projects that are set to kick off in the U.S. in fourth-quarter 2022. In analyzing the data, one market region emerges as the clear winner in terms of overall project value: the Great Lakes region, which includes Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. The region accounts for more than $23.5 billion in planned project starts, boasting a broad array of projects ranging from airport terminal expansions to lithium-ion battery plants to data centers.

Of the top 10 highest-value Industrial Manufacturing projects planned to kick off in the Great Lakes region in the upcoming months, five of them involve electric vehicles--mostly in the form of lithium-ion battery manufacturing. Examples include LG Corporation's (Seoul, South Korea) plans for an expansion of its plant in Holland, Michigan. The project entails constructing an approximately 977,000-square-foot building addition and 400,000-square-foot warehouse addition with equipment and lines to manufacture batteries for General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) (Detroit, Michigan) and Stellantis NV (NYSE:STLA) (Hoofddorp, Netherlands). The project is expected to be completed in early 2025. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can click here for the full report.

Stellantis plans to kick off a project at one of its own plants in Trenton, Michigan, where the company will perform a retool/upgrade at its engine manufacturing complex. The 822,000-square-foot South Plant will undergo equipment modifications to allow the facility to be capable of producing a variation of the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine. According to news media, the plant currently manufactures both 3.2-liter and 3.6-liter engines for Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep vehicles. Production of the new engine is expected to begin early next year. Subscribers can click here for more details.

Data centers also feature prominently in the region's upcoming project activity. Some of these come from some of the biggest players in technology. Facebook parent Meta Platforms Incorporated (NASDAQ:META) (Menlo Park, California), for example, plans to kick off a Phase II expansion of its data center campus in De Kalb, Illinois, in the upcoming quarter. E-commerce and cloud services giant Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington) will kick off construction of a grassroot data center in Hilliard, Ohio, which will include a 152,000-square-foot building to help expand Amazon's web services in the region. The project is expected to wrap up in early 2024. Subscribers can click here for more on the Meta Platforms project and here for the Amazon project.

Among the region's largest projects planned to kick off in the upcoming quarter is a terminal expansion project at the Chicago O'Hare International Airport in Illinois. A new 300,000-square-foot terminal with 10 gates will replace the 55-year-old Terminal 2. In addition, three new concourses will be built in order to make way for larger international aircraft. According to CNN Travel, O'Hare currently has a single international terminal that is separate from the domestic one, so passengers on connecting flights have to switch terminals. Robert Hoxie, chief development officer at the Chicago Department of Aviation, told CNN earlier this year, "In the new Terminal 2, called O'Hare Global Terminal, passengers will be able to clear U.S. Customs, return to the secure area and be only minutes away from their departing gate--without needing to ride a train to a different terminal or tow bags across the airfield." The project is expected to be completed in 2028. Subscribers can click here for the full report.

In another facet of the aircraft business, Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation (Savannah, Georgia) will construct a new hangar at its 11-hangar facility in Cahokia, Illinois, that will include a new cabinet assembly line and paint equipment to increase service for large-cabin twin jets. The project is expected to be completed early next year. Subscribers can click here for the report.
