Green Plains Renewable Energy Iowa Ethanol Plants to Chew Up this Season's Corn Harvest

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Cooperative-owned Green Plains Renewable Energy Incorporated (Omaha, Nebraska) is preparing for the massive Iowa corn harvest this season and expects to be grinding this year's corn crop in months to come. The company put its first fuel ethanol plant into operation in Shenandoah in August, and corn storage bins at the site are currently full.

Construction of the Shenandoah plant started in April 2006 and took 16 months to complete. The plant will utilize ICM's (Colwich, Kansas) licensed ethanol process technology and was built by Fagen Incorporated (Granite Falls, Minnesota).

The plant will have a nameplate production capacity of 50 million gallons per year and will process more than 19 million bushels of Iowa corn annually. Costs to build the plant were in the $85 million range. On November 17, the company is planning an extravagant grand-opening event complete with lunch, plant tours and the Nygaard Indy Racing team.

In about four months from now, Green Plains expects to have its second plant in Superior, Iowa, located about 180 miles north of Shenandoah, ready to start grinding corn. Construction on this plant has been underway since August 2006. The plant will also be a 50 million-gallon-per-year corn ethanol plant and will utilize Delta-T's (Williamsburg, Virginia) licensed ethanol process technology and is being built by Agri Industries (Merill, Wisconsin).

Once both plants are online, Green Plains will require more than 40 million bushels of corn to run both plants and will have an overall production capacity of 100 million gallons of fuel ethanol annually.
