Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Guatemalan privately owned company Desarrollo de Generacion Electrica y Manejo de Recursos Naturales Las Tres Niñas SA has recently requested approval from the Comision Nacional de Energia Electrica (CNEE) for the construction of two hydroelectric projects to be located in the Department of Chiquimula in the eastern region of Guatemala.
The Caparja project would involve the construction of a 57-megawatt (MW) hydropower plant equipped with three generating units with an individual capacity of 19 MW. The facility would be connected to the El Oregano Substation through a 22.22-kilometer line and supply electricity to the national grid. The plant, to be located on the Grande River in the municipality of Camotan is planned to begin construction in the first part of 2010.
Plans for the El Oregano hydropower project call for the construction of a 120-MW plant located on the same river and in the same region as the Caparja project. The El Oregano facility would consist of four hydraulic turbines and would start generating electricity by 2014.
Both projects are valued at approximately $540 million, and both are currently awaiting approval from the CNEE and the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Guatemala. According to the project's authorities, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration is interested in financing these projects. Tres Ninas SA continues to seek investors to fund these projects.
