Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--On September 19, Harbin Power Engineering Company Limited (HPEC) (Heilongjiang, China), a subsidiary of Harbin Electric Corporation (Heilongjiang, China), signed a general contract with Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) for the 747-megawatt (MW) Guddu combined-cycle power project in the headquarters of the Water Power Development Authority (WAPDA) in Lahore, Pakistan, Harbin Electric announced September 27.
Guddu, the largest combined-cycle power project in Pakistan, is located at the existing Guddu Power Company, which is overseen by Central Power Generation Company Limited. HPEC participated in the international bidding organized by PEPCO, the owner of the project, on May 15, 2008. After more than a year of commercial and technical negotiations, PEPCO awarded the bid to HPEC on July 1. On August 18, PEPCO received approval from the Ministry of Electric Power and the Economic Coordination Commission of Pakistan for the project.
According to the contract, the project will be furnished with two sets of GE Frame-9FA gas turbines, with two associated waste heat boilers and one steam turbine generator. The construction period for the project will be 36 months. The project is part of PEPCO's long-term initiative to provide reliable and cost-effective power to the people of Pakistan, said Tahir Basharat Cheema, Managing Director of PEPCO, at the signing ceremony.
The project will have the highest efficiency among all projects installed and under construction in Pakistan, with a net efficiency of 54.5%. Upon completion, the project will replace the existing underrated units 1 to 4 at Guddu.
This is the first time for Chinese enterprise to win an engineering, procurement and construction contract using the 9FA turbines overseas. The signing of the project puts HPEC in the leading position in the overseas construction contracting market for combined-cycle projects, said Harbin Electric in the announcement.
