Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Tohoku Electric Power Company (TYO:95060) (Sendai, Japan) has solidified plans to begin construction of its second reactor, Unit 2, at the Higashidori Nuclear Power Station in 2012. It is 7 kilometers (km) from Mutsu, Aomori, on the Shimokita Peninsula in the Tohoku region. The Tohoku Region encompasses the northern part of Japan's Honshu Island.
The Higashidori station is divided into four units; two of these units belong to Tohoku Electric Power Company, while Tokyo Electric Power Company (TYO:95010) (Chiyoda, Japan) is developing the remaining two sites. Operation of Tohoku Electric Power Company's first reactor, Unit 1, began on December 8, 2005.
Preliminary design for the $4 billion, 1,385-megawatt (MW), advanced-boiling water reactor has begun and will continue into 2011, as Tohoku EPCO searches for a developer. Approval for expenditure is pending; however, after approval is granted, Tohoku EPCO plans to select a general contractor and a development partner by 2012. The estimated completion date is set for sometime in 2020. Once operational, units 1 and 2 will produce a total of 2,485 MW.
