Hydro-Quebec Planning 18-Month Refurbishment of Gentilly-2 Plant in Montreal

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Province-owned utility Hydro-Quebec (Montreal, Quebec) is planning for an 18-month refurbishment of the Gentilly-2 Nuclear Generating Station in Becancour, Quebec, in 2011 and 2012. The unit consists of an Atomic Energy Canada Limited (Mississauga, Ontario) CANDU 6 pressurized water reactor and a 685-megawatt (MW) General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) steam turbine/generator.

Planning began eight years ago for the refurbishment. Work is expected to begin in March 2011 and end in September 2012. SNC-Lavalin Nuclear, a division of SNC-Lavalin Group Incorporated (TSX:SNC) (Montreal), and Atomic Energy Canada have teamed up for the project. There will be a staff of approximately 800 people needed for the project. The cost for this project is now tentatively $1.9 billion, including a $200 million contingency fund. The present total is almost four times higher than the original $500 million.
