Researched by Industrial Info Resources India (Delhi, India)--Government of Algeria-owned Societe Nationale de l'Electricite et du Gaz (Sonelgaz) (Algiers) has selected Hyundai Engineering & Construction Company Limited (HEC) (KRX: 000720) (Seoul) as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for its two combined-cycle power stations at Oumache and Jijel.
Sonelgaz plans to build combined-cycle power plants at six sites, with an aggregate capacity of 7,200 megawatts (MW). Each power station will have an installed capacity of 1,200 MW through two power blocks, including two gas turbines of 250 MW each and a 100 MW steam turbine. Power plants will be developed at Mostaghanem and Jijel in northern Algeria, and Kais and Oumache in the eastern region. Two other power plants will be located at Djelfa and Naama in the central and the western part of Algeria. All six power plants will have the same 2:1 combined-cycle multi-shaft configuration.
Sonelgaz has awarded GE Energy for an overall Equipment contract for combustion turbines, steam turbines and generator sets. Slated for kicked-off in April 2014, each project will have a construction period of 42 months.
HEC, a part of Hyundai Group, was founded in 1947 as the Hyundai Civil Works Company. HEC provides various services to the power and energy industry including feasibility study, detailed design, procurement, construction, commissioning as well as operation and maintenance of power plants and transmission projects.
Sonelgaz, the national body for electricity and gas in Algeria, was created in 1969 replacing the erstwhile authority Électricité et gaz d'Algérie (EGA). Sonelgaz currently operates power plants with a total generation capacity of 57.39 terawatt-hours (tWh). Algeria presently has 225,308 circuit-kilometers of power lines, serving almost the entire population of the country. There are plans to increase the size of the network by 5% in the coming years in order to reach isolated rural communities and hydrocarbon developments in the Sahara Desert.
