Illinois Coal Plant Undergoes Extensive Boiler Work

The Duck Creek coal-fired power station, owned by AmerenCILCO, a subsidiary of Ameren (NYSE:AEE), in Canton, Illinois, is currently involved in a major spring outage involving a wide array of boiler maintenance and upgrades. The unit has been down since mid-February with component replacements, as well a complete overhaul of the boiler. Plans were to have the boiler outage finished by July, but the scheduled work has become increasingly lengthy. Maintenance on the unit won’t be complete for another 2-3 additional weeks. In February, the boiler was opened up, gutted and completely reconfigured. There were vast amounts of work completed such as: A complete re-tubing, scrubber work, reheat work, super-heater installation, economizer work, maintenance on the soot blower and valve inspections.

After the maintenance work is done, there will be testing and system checks performed to ensure the unit will have a smooth restart. There are future plans in 2008 to tie-in scrubbers to the 441-Megawatt (MW) unit. This is the longest outage this unit has undergone since a 1976 start-up.
