Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Illinois shows a broad range in its industrial projects. Industrial Info is tracking more than $14.2 billion worth of projects that are presently under construction in the state. While a couple of light rail projects that have been underway for years push the Industrial Manufacturing Industry to the top position in regard to the state's spending, the Food & Beverage Industry makes a strong showing in the No. 2 position, with more than $3 billion in spending.
Among the top food and beverage projects underway in Illinois is a distribution center for perishable food being built by Walmart Incorporated (NYSE:WMT) (Bentonville, Arkansas) in Belvidere, about 70 miles northwest of Chicago. The 1.2 million-square-foot facility will feature the latest in high-tech equipment and will be able to provide shipments of fresh produce, dairy, eggs, flowers and frozen goods to nearby stores. Construction only recently kicked off, and the facility is expected to begin operations in 2027. Other significant food and beverage projects include confectionary maker Ferrero Group's (Alba, Italy) expansion of its plant in Bloomington. Design-build firm The Austin Company (Cleveland, Ohio) is constructing a 169,000-square-foot building addition, which will house a new production line for the Kinder Bueno chocolate and wafer bar, which launched in the U.S. in 2019. According to a company press release, the expansion will be one of the largest production lines built by Ferrero outside of Europe. Construction kicked off about a year ago and is expected to last about another year. Subscribers can click here for more information.
Tyson Foods Incorporated (NYSE:TSN) (Springdale, Arkansas) is underway with an expansion of its plant in Caseyville, Illinois, on the eastern outskirts of St. Louis, Missouri, that when completed is expected to provide about 250 jobs. Tyson is expanding the plant by 170,000 square feet and installing new production lines. The plant manufactures prepared foods for Tyson's Jimmy Dean and Hillshire Farms lines, which include breakfast foods and meats. According to a Tyson press release, the "expansion will specifically allow a larger production of grab-n-go snacking and breakfast items." While some of the production lines have been completed, the project is expected to reach its final stages early next year. Subscribers can click here for more details.
The data center sector also features prominently in Illinois' industrial construction landscape. One of the biggest of these projects is being built at the site of a former United Airlines (NASDAQ:UAL) (Chicago, Illinois) campus in Mount Prospect. CloudHQ LLC (San Francisco, California) bought most of the buildings on the United campus in 2021 with plans to demolish them and construct three data center buildings, each about 560,000 square feet and featuring more than 80 megawatts (MW) of power. Construction on the first building began in the summer of 2022 and is expected to be completed next year, after which construction of the second building will begin. Illinois is not without power projects either. Most of those presently underway are for solar facilities or transmission and distribution projects. Construction on one of the state's largest solar projects began a few months ago. An Invenergy (Chicago, Illinois) company is constructing the 250-MW Boomtown solar farm in Burnt Prairie, in the south of the state.
