India Achieves 50% Green Energy Milestone, Five Years Ahead of Paris Target

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--India has achieved a landmark energy transition milestone--50% of its total installed electricity capacity now comes from non-fossil fuel sources, reaching the Paris Agreement's 2030 target five years early. According to official data, out of 484.8 gigawatts (GW) of installed capacity, more than 234 GW is now sourced from solar, wind, large hydro and nuclear power. Notably, 184.6 GW of this is from solar and wind alone, reflecting India's intensified push toward clean energy. The country added 28 GW of renewable energy in 2024 and a further 16.3 GW between January and May 2025, marking its fastest renewable expansion since 2022.

This milestone showcases India's shift from being a cautious player in global climate negotiations to an assertive leader in clean energy deployment. The missed 2022 renewable target of 175 GW has been eclipsed by recent momentum. Yet, challenges remain--coal still meets peak evening demand, and India plans to expand coal capacity by 80 GW by 2032 to match consumption growth.

Experts emphasize the need for grid reforms, energy storage and smarter demand-side planning. Still, India's 50% green capacity achievement is not just symbolic--it's a bold step toward sustainable energy security, proving that early delivery on climate goals is possible with focused policy and investment.
