Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--India and France have announced a strategic partnership to develop small modular reactors (SMRs) and advanced modular reactors (AMRs) for civilian use. With a target of 100 gigawatts of nuclear energy capacity by 2047, India is investing more than US$2 billion in nuclear research and development. The SMRs, which are compact and factory-built, offer a cost-effective and scalable alternative to traditional nuclear reactors, making them an attractive solution for India's growing energy demands.
Beyond SMRs, both nations are collaborating on nuclear fuel-cycle technology, reactor safety mechanisms and enhanced waste management solutions. France's expertise in nuclear reprocessing and India's advancements in thorium-based reactor technology present opportunities for joint research and development.
The partnership follows India's recent move to amend its nuclear liability law, which has historically deterred foreign investment due to stringent financial responsibility clauses. This policy shift aims to facilitate smoother international collaborations, including ongoing discussions with U.S. firms for nuclear investments.
India and France have previously worked on large-scale nuclear projects, such as the proposed nuclear plant in Maharashtra at the Arabian Sea. The shift towards SMRs represents a pragmatic approach to overcoming these challenges while advancing nuclear technology.
