Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Indiana is home to a wide variety of industrial project activity, which ranges from automotive parts to pet food manufacturing. Industrial Info is tracking more than $17.8 billion worth of projects under construction in the state, led in both number and value by the Industrial Manufacturing Industry, which accounts for more than $7 billion worth of projects.
The largest manufacturing project presently under construction in Indiana is Stellantis NV's (NYSE:STLA) (Hoofddorp, Netherlands) grassroot lithium-ion battery plant in Kokomo. The project involves constructing 20 buildings with a total square footage of 3.3 million square feet and an annual production capacity of 23 gigawatt-hours of batteries that will be used in Stellantis' EV fleet. Construction kicked off earlier this year, and the project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2025. FedEx Corporation (NYSE:FDX) (Memphis, Tennessee) is underway with an expansion of its air hub in Indianapolis. The project entails constructing 16 new aircraft gates, two package-sorting facilities and another building to handle truck deliveries. The aim is to have the facility process 147,000 packages per hour upon completion later this summer. In addition, FedEx will move some of its heavy maintenance operations from Los Angeles, California, to Indianapolis when the company's lease expires at a Los Angeles air facility in 2024. One of Indiana's largest projects is for a couple of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) plants at Eli Lilly and Company's (NYSE:LLY) (Indianapolis, Indiana) campus in Lebanon. The plants are being built concurrently on the campus. Plant I will be two stories and 330,000 square feet, while Plant 2 will come in at 220,000 square feet. The facilities will expand Eli Lilly's manufacturing capacity of APIs for brand-name and generic drugs as well as new therapeutic modalities such as genetic medicines. The facilities are expected to be completed in early 2027. In the process of wrapping up construction is NextEra Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) Dunns Bridge I solar farm, which also will include a battery energy storage system (BESS). After startup, the facility will use approximately 900,000 solar panels to provide nameplate generating capacity of 265 megawatts (MW), with the accompanying BESS capable of providing 75 MW of power in times of low solar output. The solar farm is expected to be completed in the coming weeks, followed by the BESS a few months later.
