India's paper production (excluding newsprint) reached an all-time low of 6.9 million tons in 2018-19, the second consecutive year of double-digit declines. In 2017-18, India's paper production dropped 11.5% from the previous year; in 2018-19, it fell 31%.
The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy Pvt. Limited (CMIE) expects to see paper production decline to 6.6 million tons in the coming year, while packaging paper demand is not expected to see any substantial growth. As in many other countries, the decline is attributed to the growth of digital communication.
