Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Large-scale megaprojects grab headlines and dominate discussions in the news media. The potential investments also constitute a large part of Industrial Info's project data. The attention that such projects receive is not always positive, and can actually work to delay them.
Megaprojects can have huge kick-off slippage periods from the originally planned construction starts, meaning their heavily-publicized initial announcements cease being accurate as time goes by. As such, finding out where the project is in its development cycle, or if it is even still being pursued, can be difficult. Because Industrial Info tracks its projects from conception to completion, and checks in on them regularly, our clients can stay abreast of megaprojects in ways that would not be possible through regular internet or public information sources.
The longest kick-off slippage in Industrial Info's Oil & Gas Pipeline project database is the Keystone XL (KXL) pipeline project by TransCanada Corporation (NYSE:TRP) (Calgary, Alberta). KXL has had a long, embattled history, leading to its 79-month kick-off slippage. Following it up is TransCanada's recently-canceled other megaproject, Energy East, with a slippage of 35 months. Long kick-off slippages and delays are not unique to Canada, however. Sunoco Logistics Partners (now merged with Dallas, Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners, L.P. (NYSE:ETP)) has worked for a long time for its Mariner East II expansion project to come to fruition, and has seen its kick-off date slip by 29 months from the original schedule. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Keystone XL, Energy East and Mariner East II.
Other active megaprojects tend to have slippages of at least 12 months. The recently-announced $2 billion Permico Energia LLC (Houston, Texas) project to build a natural gas liquids (NGL) pipeline from the Permian Basin to Corpus Christi, Texas, currently has no slippage to speak of. However, given the current trends of similar projects and their kick-off dates, this situation could change. For related information, see Industrial Info's project report.
