Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--As inexpensive, abundant shale gas makes its way into the U.S. market and Power companies seek to shutter coal-fired plants for economic and environmental reasons, natural gas-fired power plants are springing up throughout the U.S. Industrial Info is tracking $5.9 billion in U.S. natural gas-fired power project starts and completions in the third quarter of 2018. Ohio, which is part of the Great Lakes market region, leads other states in the value of this project activity.

Among the projects planned to kick off in the quarter is Advanced Power AG's (Zug, Switzerland) South Field Energy Center near Wellsville, Ohio. The combined-cycle plant will have a generating capacity of 1,100 megawatts (MW). Construction is planned to kick off this summer and be completed in the fourth quarter of 2020. The project will use General Electric (NYSE:GE) (GE) (Boston, Massachusetts) equipment. The project has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $1.1 billion. Also in Ohio, CME Energy LLC (Boston) plans to begin work on a natural gas-fired power plant near the city of Oregon. The plant will use Siemens AG (Munich, Germany) equipment. The facility will have a generating capacity of 955 MW. Construction is planned to take about two years. Black & Veatch Incorporated (Overland Park, Kansas) is providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC). The project has an estimated TIV of $860 million. In New Jersey, Stonegate Power LLC (East Brunswick, New Jersey) is gearing up to begin construction on the Middlesex Energy Center on a 48-acre former Superfund site in Sayreville. AECOM (NYSE:ACM) (Los Angeles, California) is providing EPC. Construction is planned to wrap up in the fourth quarter of 2020. The plant will use GE equipment. In North Carolina, NTE Energy LLC (St. Augustine, Florida) is preparing to kick off construction of a 500-MW natural gas-fired power plant near Reidsville this summer. The company recently began operations at the 475-MW Middletown Energy Center in Ohio. Gemma Power Systems LLC (Glastonbury, Connecticut) is providing EPC on the Reidsville project, which will take an estimated three years to complete. The project has an estimated TIV of $510 million. The City of Lansing, Michigan, is preparing to kick off construction of the Erickson natural gas-fired power station in the upcoming quarter. The 250-MW plant is planned to be completed in early 2021. The facility will replace an existing coal-fired plant. Among the projects planned for completion in the quarter is the 940-MW Lordstown Energy Center in Lordstown, Ohio. Construction on the plant began in early 2016 and is expected to be wrapped up this summer. The project is owned by Pure Energy Resources LLC (Burlington, Massachusetts). Kokosing Industrial Company (Westerville, Ohio) is performing EPC. The project has an estimated TIV of $890 million and will use Siemens equipment.
