Industrial Manufacturing takes the leading edge in Florida in large part from a single transportation project: Phase II of a light rail extension from West Palm Beach to Orlando International Airport. The project involves extending the existing line from West Palm Beach to Orlando by installing 40 miles of new track and upgrading 129 miles of existing track. The project has a variety of general contractors, who kicked off construction in mid-2019. The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year. While construction of natural gas-fired power plants has declined in favor of renewable forms of energy in recent years, two of Florida's highest-value projects involve the construction of natural gas power plants.
In Palatka, about 45 miles east of Gainesville, Seminole Electric Cooperative Incorporated (Tampa, Florida) has been underway with a combined-cycle unit addition at an existing plant since early 2020. The Seminole Generating Station at present has two 638-megawatt (MW) coal-fired units. The new gas-fired unit will have a generating capacity of 1,028 MW and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. In Apollo Beach, Florida, south of Tampa, Tampa Electric Company (Tampa) is converting the coal-fired Unit 1 at the Big Bend Power Station to burn natural gas in a combined-cycle configuration. The project kicked off in the summer of 2019 and is expected to wrap up in the third quarter of this year. Subscribers can click here for the detailed report.
In the northeast of the state, the Jacksonville Port Authority is at work on couple of projects to expand its facilities. Among these is a harbor-deepening project that will increase the existing channel from 40 to 47 feet deep over a 13-mile stretch. The project kicked off in 2017 and is nearing completion. A Phase II portion of the project kicked off in 2020 that entails dredging approximately 4.1 million cubic yards of material from 1.7 nautical miles of the St. Johns River, expanding the turning basin and deepening births. Phase II is expected to be completed later this year. Subscribers can click here for the report on Phase I and here for Phase II.
