Industrial Market Outlook: More Than $11.5 Billion in Power Projects Planned in U.S. Northeast for 2017

Many of the capital projects in the region are set to take advantage of the abundant natural gas coming from the Marcellus Shale in Pennsylvania.

Among the largest Power Industry projects set to kick off in the region is the grassroot, natural gas-fired Beech Hollow Power Station in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania. Construction of the 1,054-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle plant is set to kick off in the fourth quarter of this year and take about two and half years to complete. The project has an estimated total investment value (TIV) $1.16 billion. Burns & McDonnell Incorporated (Kansas City, Missouri) is acting as engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firm on the project, which is owned by Robinson Power Company LLC (Burgettstown). Also in Pennsylvania is the planned CPV Fairview Energy Center, which will be built on a brownfield site near Johnstown, in the southwest of the state. The 980-MW combined-cycle plant is set to begin construction in the third quarter of this year and will take about two years to complete. Competitive Power Ventures Incorporated (Braintree, Massachusetts) is the owner of the project, which has an estimated TIV of $1 billion. In New Jersey, Stonegate Power LLC's (East Brunswick, New Jersey) $880 million Middlesex Energy Center in South River is set to begin construction in October of this year. URS-AEMCOM Corporation (Princeton, New Jersey) is acting as EPC firm on the combined-cycle project, which is set for completion in the first quarter of 2020. In addition to large capital projects, Industrial Info also is tracking $401 million of Power Industry maintenance projects set to kick off in the region this year. Chief among these are several nuclear unit refueling outages, including Exelon Corporation's (NYSE:EXC) planned outage at the Limerick Nuclear Power Station in Limerick, Pennsylvania. The outage is planned to occur in April of this year and has an estimated total investment value of $25 million.
