Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--In February 2013, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) approved Selian No.1 & No.2 underground (U-G) coal mine projects in Inner Mongolia, according to an announcement from the National Energy Administration on March 20.

According to the approval, both coal mines are located in the Gaotouyao mining zone in Ordos City, in northern China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region. Selian No.1 U-G Coal Mine is being developed by Inner Mongolia Datong Coal Ordos Mining Investment Company Limited (Ordos, Inner Mongolia), a subsidiary of Datong Coal Mine Group Company Limited (Datong, Shanxi). The coal mine has a designed annual output of 5 million metric tons per year, with a total investment of about $450 million. The project mainly comprises a 955-meter-long, 5.2-meter-wide main inclined shaft; a 1,168-meter-long, 5.6-meter-wide auxiliary inclined shaft; a 6-meter-diameter vertical inlet ventilation shaft; a 7-meter vertical outlet ventilation shaft; and a coal preparation plant of the same scale. Beijing Huayu Engineering Company Limited (Beijing) is responsible for the design and engineering of the project.

Selian No.2 U-G Coal Mine is invested and operated by Ordos Zhongbei Coal Chemical Industry Company Limited (Ordos, Inner Mongolis), a subsidiary of Huainan Mining Group Company Limited (Huainan, Anhui). The coal mine has a designed annual output of 4 million metric tons per year, with a total investment of about $510 million. The project also mainly comprises a main inclined shaft, an auxiliary inclined shaft, a pair of vertical ventilation shafts, and a coal preparation plant of the same scale designed by Beijing Huayu Engineering.

Both projects kicked off construction prior to the receiving of final approval from the NDRC. Construction of Selian No.1 U-G Coal Mine kicked off in March 2011; according to the schedule, the project is expected to begin operations at the end of this year. Construction of Selian No.2 U-G Coal Mine kicked off in April 2012; according to the schedule, the project will begin operation in 2015.
