Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--By the end of 2007, the total installed capacity of wind power in China will reach 5 gigawatts (gW), which means that the nation's goal of reaching 5 gW in installed wind-power capacity by 2010 can be accomplished three years ahead of schedule, said Li Junfeng, Secretary of the Chinese Renewable Energy Industries Association (CREIA) at the opening ceremony of Wind Power Shanghai 2007. The total installed capacity of wind power in China could reach 120 gW in 2020, provided that adequate policies are adopted, said Arthouros Zervos, President of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).
During the conference, CREIA and GWEC jointly introduced the "China Wind Power Report 2007." According to the report, the total installed capacity of wind power in China could reach 50 gW in 2020, or 4% of the total installed capacity in China based on the current policy. The installed capacity of wind power could increase to 80 gW, or 7% of the total installed capacity, if the current policy can be improved. The installed capacity of wind power could even jump to 120 gW, or 10% of the total installed capacity, in 2020.
So far, the target for wind power published by the Chinese government is to have 30 gW installed capacity of wind power in 2020.
As of June 30, 2007, the installed capacity of wind power across the country amounted to 1 gW in the year, and the cumulative capacity was up to 3.6 gW. It is expected that an additional 2.4 to 2.6 gW of wind power will go into operation by year's end.
