Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Suez Cement's (SC) plants in Egypt will be powered by wind under a contract with Italgen, which has been studying the feasibility of a wind park project near Gulf El-Zeit since 2008. This will be the first time a private investor has supplied power to the Egyptian national grid.
Power from the project will be transmitted to plants operated by SC, an Italcementi (OTC:ITABF) (Bergamo, Italy) subsidiary. The first phase of the project, estimated at $120 million to $130 million, will have an installed-capacity of 120 megawatts (MW) and should cover about 40% of the cement company's power requirements. When the second phase has been completed, installed capacity should increase to 400 MW.
Italgen will now proceed with a short list of bids received from 10 international companies for the construction of the turbines and will provide details of the supporting financial package. The initiative for this project comes from the government's plan to produce 7,000 MW of the national power supply from renewables by 2020.
