Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Each day, millions of Americans eat packaged salads and other greens and vegetables that come from greenhouses. The number of people who use bagged or packaged salads is expected to rise to more than 250 million this year, according data agency Statista. To this end, billions of dollars' worth of projects are lined up for the U.S. greenhouse sector. While several companies are constructing greenhouses of varying sizes, most of the major, multi-phase projects come from a few players in the sector.

One of the key players in the U.S. greenhouse sector is Plant Agricultural Systems LLC (Fort Lauderdale, Florida), which is planning large projects in West Texas and Florida. Construction is in a very early stage at the company's planned location in Sanderson, Florida. Phase I involves constructing an 8.1 million-square-foot hydroponic greenhouse to produce leafy greens and vine crops such as tomatoes. The company plans to launch construction of a 5.3-million-square-foot facility to grow similar produce in Lubbock, Texas. The greenhouse is expected to begin operations in 2027, when a second phase of construction could potentially begin, increasing the amount of square-footage under glass. Another key player in the U.S. greenhouse segment is BrightFarms Incorporated (Irvington, New York), which is planning projects in several states, the largest of which is set in Lorena, Texas, just south of Waco. Work on the first greenhouse facility at the site kicked off last year and will result in a 400,000-square-foot space. Work on this first phase is winding down, and work on a second phase will begin a couple of months later, followed by two further phases of construction, each adding another greenhouse. In total, BrightFarms expects to produce about 35 million pounds of lettuce and leafy greens from the site, which is one of four U.S. hubs being established by the company. Another BrightFarms greenhouse hub is planned for East Allen Township, Pennsylvania, about 65 miles north of Philadelphia. This project includes four planned phases of construction. This first of these is planned to kick off soon, entailing construction of a 680,000-square-foot facility along with headhouse buildings that will provide service space such as offices, storage areas, and thermostat, nutrient and water regulation equipment. This phase is expected to be finished late next year, when a second phase of construction adding a similarly sized greenhouse will begin. In total, four large greenhouses are planned for the site, with the final one expected to be completed in late 2027 or early 2028. BrightFarms produces a range of packaged salad greens and salad kits as well as basil, selling to supermarkets including Walmart Incorporated (NYSE:WMT) (Bentonville, Arkansas) and Giant Food Stores (Carlilse, Pennsylvania).

A third important company in the U.S. greenhouse scene is American Ag Energy Incorporated (Cambridge, Massachusetts). The company is underway with construction of a grassroot greenhouse and seed-processing complex in South Kingstown, Rhode Island. The campus will include a mushroom grow house, lettuce grow house, cucumber grow house, tomato grow house, a seed-processing facility and three 4,000-square-foot coolers. Construction kicked off in the beginning of this year, putting it on track for an expected completion date around mid-2025. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.

American Ag Energy this year began operating a 10-acre greenhouse in Berlin, New Hampshire, that will produce an estimated 15 million head of lettuce per year after ramping up to full production. Next on the company's agenda for the Berlin site is a 10-acre tomato greenhouse that is expected to yield about 8 million pounds of tomatoes per year from early 2027 onward. A third greenhouse for leafy greens also is planned and expected to be completed in mid-2027. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the related project reports.
