Keystone Coal Plant Forced Offline for Repairs

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Keystone Power Station, a coal-fired power station located in Shelocta, Pennsylvania, and owned by RRI Energy Incorporated (NYSE:RRI) (Houston, Texas) had its 936-megawatt (MW) Coal Unit 01 taken offline Monday, October 19, for unplanned maintenance repairs. Plant officials confirmed that the unit's main steam line failed and that they want to check for possible cracks.

Plant officials are stating that they hope to return the unit to operation in a week, but the findings will determine the exact timeframe. Unit 02 has been offline for a planned maintenance outage, but a crack will delay the return of this unit. The detected crack was about 3 inches in length in the steam line pipe. After discovering the crack on Unit 02, plant officials want to make sure that Unit 01 is evaluated as well. The Keystone station began operation in 1967.

The plant has two units, which have a combined capacity of 1,872 megawatts.
