Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Hydrocarbon-rich Kuwait is targeting 2,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy by 2030. Bidding has opened for the 70-MW Salem al-Hajraf project, for which 37 companies are prequalified.
The project's solar thermal output will contribute 50 MW, and wind and photovoltaic (PV) will contribute 10 MW each. The project is sited at Shagaya, which is west of Kuwait City on the Iraq-Saudi Arabia border.
The second and third phases of the 2030 plan target 930 MW and 1,000 MW, respectively.
Currently, Kuwait uses 126 million barrels of oil annually, fuelling 14,000 MW of power output.
