The top 10 counties for industrial project activity in Indiana include Lake, Vermillion, Spencer, Saint Joseph, Posey, Madison, Howard, Tippecanoe, Gibson and Marion. These 10 counties account for 66% of the project activity in the state by value, with 147 projects totaling $17.6 billion.

Named after Lake Michigan, and bordering Illinois and Chicago to the west, is Lake County, the second-most populous county in Indiana and No. 1 in the state for industrial projects, with 41 representing $3.4 billion in total investment value. In Lake County, BP Products North America Incorporated (Whiting, Indiana), a division of BP plc (NYSE:BP) (London, England), is nearing completion of several projects, including an $800 million delayed coker unit addition at the Whiting Refinery. The addition is part of a $3.8 billion project to boost processing capacity for Canadian sour crude oil.

To the south and center of Indiana and bordering Illinois is Vermillion County, which has the second-largest value of active industrial projects, with $3 billion planned. Duke Energy (NYSE:DUK), which operates the Cayuga Power Station in Vermillion County, began construction last month on a $150 million emissions improvement project, which will allow the plant to meet state and federal emissions guidelines. The project involves the installation of two selective catalytic reduction units to reduce NOx emissions at the coal-fired power plant. The project is scheduled for completion in 2014.
