Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--M.A. Mortenson Construction (Minneapolis, Minnesota), which provides engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services to energy and infrastructure projects across North America, is involved in nearly $9.2 billion worth of active projects, according to Industrial Info's project database. More than half of the projects are attributed to the Power Industry and include generation from wind, solar and natural gas; about $4 billion worth are set to begin or finish construction this year.

Mortenson is expected to finish construction in the coming months on Aksamit Resource Management's (Houston, Texas) $110 million Milligan III windfarm expansion in Swanton, Nebraska, which will comes on the heels of the $525 million Milligan I, which is in its final stages. The first stage will generate 300 megawatts (MW) from 150 Vestas (Aarhus, Denmark) turbines, and the expansion will add 74 MW from 37 Vestas turbines. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Milligan's initial phase and expansion.

Mortenson is performing EPC work on the Milligan project and two other windfarms that are set to begin construction in the second quarter: Geronimo Energy LLC's (Edina, Minnesota) $300 million Green River Windfarm in Dixon, Illinois, which will generate 212 MW from 64 Gamesa turbines, and MidAmerican Energy Company's (Des Moines, Iowa) $300 million Beaver Creek Windfarm in Boone, Iowa, which will generate 170 MW from 85 Vestas turbines. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the Green River and Beaver Creek projects.

Three other windfarm projects with Mortenson as the EPC contractor are under construction and are set to be completed in the fourth quarter: Xcel Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:XEL) (Minneapolis, Minnesota) $500 million Rush Creek Windfarm Phase I and $500 million Phase II in Silma, Colorado, each of which will generate 300 MW from 150 Vestas turbines, and MidAmerican Energy's $424 million Walnut Ridge Windfarm in Walnut, Illinois, which will generate 212 MW from 106 Vestas turbines. The Rush Creek project also has a $9 million substation in Simla. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Rush Creek's Phase I, Phase II and substation, and the Walnut Ridge facility.

In addition to these wind-power projects, Mortenson is the EPC contractor on NextEra Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) $133.7 million solar power plant in Stuttgart, Arkansas. The facility is expected to generate 81 MW from 363,922 photovoltaic (PV) fixed-tilt solar panels. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

But the single largest project involving Mortenson is not energy-related: Sound Transit's (Seattle, Washington) $2.1 billion Northgate Link light rail extension in Seattle, Washington, which is ahead of schedule but not expected to wrap up until late 2021. Seattle aims to stretch its light-rail system more than four miles north from the University of Washington to the urban village of Northgate. Mortenson is serving as general contractor, while Northstar (Bellvue, Washington), a joint venture between Jacobs and CH2M, is the construction manager. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
