Madhya Pradesh Power Generating Company Limited (MPPGCL) (Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh) is adding two 250-megawatt (MW) coal-fired units to its Satpura thermal power station in the village of Sarni, in the Betul district of Madhya Pradesh.
The estimated total investment value for this project is $6 billion. MPPGCL has awarded the equipment and construction contract to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BSE:500103) (BHEL) (New Delhi).
The planning and fund approval for the project was completed in June 2007, and the bidding for the construction contract began in February2008. Construction started in late 2008, and in 2009, the project received environment clearance.
A power purchase agreement between MPPGCL and Madhya Pradesh Power Limited was signed in March 2010. Units 10 and 11 are scheduled to begin generating power in February 2011.
MPPGCL has acquired 130 hectares of land for fly ash disposal. Villagers were compensated for the land use.
Satpura thermal power station has a current installed capacity of 1,142.5 MW via nine units. Units 1 through 5 have each have a 62.5-MW capacity. Unit 6 has a capacity of 200 MW, units 7, 8 and 9 have a 210-MW capacity.
