Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Maire Tecnimont SpA (BIT:MT) (Rome, Italy) is positioned to complete a run of three contracts in a month for operators in Egypt's fertilizer industry for the expansion and upgrading of manufacturing facilities.
In October, Orascom Construction Industries (OCI) (Cairo, Egypt) awarded a $120 million contract to Maire Tecnimont to execute civil, electromechanical and erection work for state-owned Egyptian Chemical Industries Company's (Kima) (Aswan, Egypt) nitrogen-based fertilizer complex in Aswan.
The complex will include ammonia and urea production lines, a urea granulation unit, and all related and ancillary facilities. The complex is scheduled to produce 550,000 tons of nitrogen-based fertilizers per year.
Under the terms of the deal, OCI will supply the structural steel, painting and insulation materials required for the project. The full scope of the engineering, procurement and construction contract is scheduled for completion in 33 months.
At the end of October, Kima signed a contract with Maire Tecnimont for the development of its urea plant using natural gas as a power feed instead of electricity. The plant will double its production to 1,200 tons per day, consisting of 900 tons of nitrogen fertilizer and 300 tons of ammonium nitrate fertilizer.
The plant covers an area of 350,000 square meters and will allow Tecnimont to construct new production lines and to develop existing installations.
Another $600 million contract from Delta Company for Fertilizer and Chemical Industries (Dakahlia, Egypt) for the upgrading of its plant in Talkha City, north of Cairo, is due for signing in the next few days.
Maire Tecnimont is one of four international companies bidding for the Delta contract. Other companies include Saipem SpA (BIT:SPM) (Milan), ThyssenKrupp Uhde (Dortmund, Germany) and Samsung Fine Chemical Company Limited (SEO:004000) (Ulsan, South Korea).
