Petroleum Refining
Phillips 66 has reduced production rates by an estimated 20% at its 130,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) refinery in Los Angeles, California, as gasoline demand has fallen due to COVID-19 concerns. Also, Marathon has pushed back a plant-wide maintenance turnaround from this month to mid-August at its 103,500-BBL/d refinery in Wilmington, California.
Oil & Gas Pipelines
The Colonial pipeline is expected to reduce flowrates by 20% on lines 1 & 2 beginning March 24, due to falling demand. Line 1-A of the pipeline moves 1.5 million BBL/d of gasoline from Houston to Greensboro, North Carolina. Line 2-A moves 1.2 million BBL/d of middle distillates (diesel, heating oil, jet fuel) from Houston to Greensboro.
Alternative Fuels
Cielo Waste Solutions completed construction and began commercial operations of its new, 2.2 million-gallon-per-year biodiesel plant in Alberta just last month. The company has since shuttered operations until further notice, due to the market crisis and COVID-19.
Automotive
The U.S. automotive sector is essentially shut down. Automakers have announced they have closed their assembly plants for the next two weeks. After that time, they plan to reopen on a rotating basis, with a plant open for a period of time, then closed for in-depth cleaning and sterilization, while another plant operates. As a result, the tier suppliers are shutting down as well.
Food & Beverage
Some breweries and distilleries have changed processing lines to manufacture hand sanitizer. Cold, refrigerated and dry-storage facilities will see high demand. Tyson Foods is shifting products from restaurants to grocery stores and has added more work shifts.
Pulp, Paper and Wood
The outbreak is hitting the recovered paper sector hard. Container availability has dropped and the generation of paper is lower as fewer people are shopping and more are working from home.
