Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Mariposa County Board of Supervisors met this week to discuss the purchase of 7.6-acre parcel of the solid waste facilities land for the planned Mariposa Biomass Group (Mariposa, California) biomass project.
California Governor Jerry Brown's Executive Order B-30-15, which establishes a statewide goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 40% below 1990 levels by 2030, has sparked development of small mega-watt biomass community projects throughout California. There are currently over $70 million in project development that are expected to go on-line by the end of 2018.
The Mariposa Biomass project involves the installation of a 2.4 megawatt (MW) facility utilizing Cortus Energy (Stockholm, Sweden) modular construction technology that will gasify 50 tons per day of biomass material to produce syngas to drive a GE Jenbacher Type 6 engine to produce renewable energy.
The electricity will be used as community power and the remaining power will be purchased by the local utility, Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) (San Francisco, California) to aid in meeting the governor's goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. PG&E is a subsidiary of PG&E Corporation (NYSE:PCG) (San Francisco).
The project was awarded a U.S Department of Agriculture U.S. Forest Service 2016 Wood Innovations grant of $244,080 to use wood residues primarily from forests for electricity production earlier this year, and county is still in the process of securing an owner partnership.
Construction is not anticipated to get under way until late 2017 and the facility is expected to by on-line by the third quarter of 2018.
The California Public Utilities Commission SB 32 FIT program, which went into effect this month, and the ReMAT Feed-In-Tariff program give applicants a set contract price for small megawatt renewable projects and power purchase agreements.
Additional projects planned in California under this plan include Phoenix Energy in Truckee; North Fork Community Power; Wilseville Community Power; Camptonville Community Partnership and Nevada County Biomass.
