Massachusetts Firm Looks to Develop 3,200 Megawatts of Hydroelectric Power

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Free Flow Power Company (FFP) (Manchester, Massachusetts) has submitted permit applications to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for 59 hydroelectric projects along the Mississippi River to produce renewable energy. The projects would have a generating capacity of about 3,200 megawatts (MW) and an expected average generation of 1,600 MW. The total investment value for the projects should be in the range of $1.6 billion. These projects will range in nameplate capacity from 18 MW to 60 MW with an average generation of 9-30 MW.

FFP has developed its own turbine/generator that uses a combination of magnetic levitation and hydrodynamic running bearings to reduce friction, improve efficiency and avoid chemical lubricants that can leak into the environment. The turbines will be of run-of-river variety that will not need dams or diversions and will not impede fish and other animals or reduce levels of dissolved oxygen.

FFP is designing two versions of the turbine/generator: a 20-kilowatt (kW) version that weighs about two tons and a 15-kW version that weighs about 500 pounds. FFP is identifying these as 10 kW and 7.5 kW, as that will be the average amount of power generated. The company plans to build 20,000 to 30,000 the first year and more thereafter.

The firm plans to install these turbine/generators in areas that will average about 100 feet deep with the turbine/generators at least 25 feet below the surface. A 10 MW nameplate generator will call for the installation of 500 turbine/generators.
