Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Currently, in the state of Massachusetts, industrial companies are looking at 90 major capital and maintenance projects at industrial sites. These projects represent more than $4.4 billion in total investment value (TIV) and are scheduled to begin construction in 2005 through 2007. Ninety percent of these projects are capital related and the remaining 10% are maintenance projects. Of the capital projects only 15% have been funded to date.
About 25% of the planned spending will occur in Middlesex County, which leads all counties in planned industrial project spending TIV, with just over $1.4 billion. Barnstable, Bristol, Essex, and Suffolk Counties each have more than $400 million planned.
The Power Industry leads the way with more than $1.6 billion planned. There are 20 Power Industry projects planned including a large windfarm and numerous environmental upgrades at coal-fired power plants in the states. The Oil & Gas Terminals Industry is second with just under $1.4 billion planned. This is mainly due to two large LNG receiving terminals, which are being proposed in Middlesex and Bristol counties. The Pharmaceutical & Biotech Industry is not far behind with around $1 billion planned from 21 separate projects.
The fact that the Industrial Manufacturing Industry has the most projects planned of any industry at 29, but only the fourth largest TIV at $241 million, shows that most of the projects in this industry are smaller in scope than in the other industries. There is no project over $20 million planned for this industry.
Massachusetts is home to 594 major operational industrial plants. It has the most plants of any state in the New England Region.
