Researched by Industrial Info India (Delhi, India)--Central India has Metals & Minerals Industry project activity worth more than $100 billion that is planned to kick off in the next three years. These include greenfield and brownfield projects in the cement, sponge iron, ferroalloys and steel sectors.
Many of these companies are also investing in captive power projects and coal washeries to meet their fuel and power needs. These investments are the direct result of initiatives taken up by the government to utilize the vast mineral resources in Central India.

The Indian government therefore wants to raise the share of India's manufacturing sector from 16% of the GDP to 24% of the GDP. The Government has decided to formulate a dedicated manufacturing policy that will serve as a bedrock in the globally competitive manufacturing sector. All major iron and steel companies are focusing on capacity expansions to meet the target of 150 million tons of steel production by 2020.
The inclusion of captive power plants at many of these plants represents a major step taken by these companies to be self-sufficient for energy requirements. Coal washeries are being developed to clean the high-carbon content of Indian coal. These companies are also focusing on setting up integrated steel mill units, which have inbuilt sponge iron, steel rolling mills and ferroalloy manufacturing units.
