Mexico's CFE Sets New Deadline for Proposals for 50-Megawatt Geothermal Power Project

Español
Researched by Industrial Info Resources Latin America (Cordoba, Argentina)--Mexico's state-owned utility Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) (Mexico City) has postponed the deadline date for proposals submittal for the 50-megawatt (MW) Los Azufres III geothermal power project to May 3. Initially the deadline was set for March 29, but because of administrative delays, the date has been postponed more than a month, also moving out the scheduled operational startup of the plant from September to October 2014.

The bidding process, lunched on November 30, 2011, is for the engineering, procurement, construction and startup of the 50-MW plant, which will have one or two condensing steam turbines. The plant will be located within the Los Azufres geothermal complex located on San Andres Hill, near the city of Hidalgo (Michoacan).

Currently, the plant has an installed capacity of 188 MW, generated by a single 50-MW condensing steam turbine, four 25-MW condensing units, seven 5-MW backpressure units and two 1.5-MW binary units. All units are fed with steam produced by 17 production wells connected to a steam pipe grid.

CFE also owns and operates the geothermal facilities of Tres Virgenes (10-MW) in Baja California del Sur; Los Humeros (40-MW) in Puebla; and the geothermal complex of Cerro Prieto (645-MW) in Baja California.

The company is completing a 25-MW addition to Los Humeros plant and plans to build the 25-MW grassroot Cerritos Colorados plant in Gudalajara, which is expected to begin commercial operations by the end of 2015.
