Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--It perhaps comes as no surprise that the automotive sector dominates activity in Michigan's industrial sector, but as times change, such projects have taken on different qualities and now are largely geared toward supplying an increasing number of electric vehicles (EVs). But the automotive sector isn't the only industrial sector showing activity in Michigan, which boasts project activity in several different sectors, amounting to $18.5 billion.

In terms of investment value, Michigan's four largest projects, all weighing in with investments of more than $1.5 billion each and accounting for an estimated $9.4 billion in combined spending, involve the manufacture of batteries for EVs and hybrid vehicles. The largest of these projects is being undertaken by Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) (Dearborn, Michigan), which at a plant Marshall, Michigan, about 35 miles east of Kalamazoo, is forgoing the now-standard lithium-ion battery for lithium-iron-phosphate batteries, which boast a longer lifespan and enhanced safety. Construction on the plant kicked off late last year and entails building a 2.5 million-square-foot facility that will be able to manufacture 35 gigawatt-hours of batteries per year. The plant is expected to be completed and begin ramping up toward full production in early 2026. Developers of the other largest battery projects include General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) (GM) (Detroit, Michigan), LG Energy Solution (Seoul, South Korea) and Our Next Energy (Novi, Michigan).

A fifth $1 billion+ project underway in Michigan has nothing to do with batteries, but rather shipping. In late 2022, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers started a long-term project in the shipping locks at Sault Sainte Marie, on Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The area currently includes two decommissioned locks, the Sabin and Davis locks, that will be altered to accommodate larger vessels. The Sabin lock will be completely demolished to make way for a new lock that also will use a portion of the Davis lock, with new approach walls that will be 1,200 feet long with width of 110 feet to make way for larger vessels and maintain or grow the facility's shipments of 80 million tons of cargo per year. The project entails erecting sizable grout curtains around the footprint of the new lock to avoid water infiltration during excavation. The new lock is expected to begin receiving cargo in 2030. While Michigan's industrial manufacturing sector dominates activity in the state, coming in a distant second position in terms of spending is the Power Industry. Projects in this segment are geared largely toward cleaner forms of power generation. Holtec International Incorporated (Jupiter, Florida), for example, is refurbishing the sole reactor of the Palisades Nuclear Power Station in Van Buren County, which was closed in May 2022. Funds from both federal and state coffers will aid Holtec in its restart effort, which is expected to be completed in 2025, when the plant will once again provide more than 800 megawatts (MW) of emissions-free generation to the grid. Projects to provide wind power also are underway in the state. Renewable energy behemoth Invenergy LLC (Chicago, Illinois) is underway with its Heartland Windfarm in Gratiot County, which will boast 40 turbines, each rated at 5 MW, to provide 200 MW of generation when completed later this year, after a little more than a year of expected active construction. The Food & Beverage Industry also accounts for hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of activity in the state. Examples of projects in this sector include Abbott Laboratories' (NYSE:ABT) (Chicago, Illinois) expansion of its infant formula-manufacturing plant in Sturgis, in the south of the state near the Indiana border. Abbott is adding a 35,000-square-foot building addition to the existing 780,000-square-foot facility that will allow for new dryer, boiler and compressor additions. A new water-treatment room also is part of construction, which is expected to wrap up toward the end of this year. While the automotive sector leads the state for project activity, at least one former automotive site is being repurposed for a new use. The Home Depot Incorporated (NYSE:HD) (Atlanta, Georgia) is building a 420,000-square-foot building at the site of a former GM transmission plant that will provide a regional distribution center for larger, bulkier items such as lumber, insulation, roofing shingles and more. General contractor Donnelly Construction (Wayne, New Jersey) began work at the site in 2023 and is expected to be completed with the project this summer.
