Michigan to Continue Drive for Diversified Fuels with Plans for 6,925 Megawatts of New Generation
Michigan, which has almost 32,000 megawatts (MW) of operational generation capacity supported by various fuel sources, continues to plan for future growth with a variety of fuels.

Michigan utilizes biomass, coal, hydropower, natural gas, nuclear power, oil and wind as sources to provide generation, and is now looking at all of those for an additional 6,925 MW.
Click on the image at right to see a breakdown of new power generation planned in Michigan.Companies planning new generation include Consumer Energy, a subsidiary of CMS Energy Corporation (NYSE:CMS) (Jackson, Michigan), which is looking at 930 MW of coal generation and 1.5 MW of hydroelectric generation. Detroit Edison Company, a subsidiary of DTE Energy (NYSE:DTE) (Detroit, Michigan), is looking at a 1,540 MW of nuclear-unit additions. Several smaller utilities -- the Escanaba Electric Department, Holland Board of Public Works and Wolverine Power Supply Cooperative (Cadillac, Michigan) -- are also looking at new self-build coal generation projects.
More than 1,350 MW of windfarms are being developed, primarily by independent power producers like BP Alternative Energy North America Incorporated, a subsidiary of BP PLC (NYSE:BP) (London), Noble Environmental Power LLC (Essex, Connecticut) and Midland Energy LLC (Midland, Michigan).
Independent power producers are also looking at coal-fired plants like Mid-Michigan Energy LLC (Detroit), a joint venture owned by LS Power Group (East Brunswick, New Jersey) and Dynegy Incorporated (NYSE:DYN) (Houston, Texas), and natural-gas-fired plants like Indeck Energy Services Incorporated's (Buffalo Grove, Illinois) 1,100-MW Niles Power Plant.
