Minnesota Couple Leading Development Team to Build Three Coal IGCC Power Plants for an Additional 3,600 Megawatts

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Excelsior Energy, Incorporated (Minnetonka, Minnesota), co-founded by husband and wife team of Julie Jorgensen and Thomas Micheletti, has announced two sites for the Mesaba Energy Centers each to have two 606-megawatt (MW) integrated gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) units for about 1,200 megawatts per site. They also have a third site that is yet to be announced in Minnesota. The units are to use ConocoPhillips gasification technology to convert the coal to a synthetic gas (syngas) to be used as fuel instead of natural gas in combined cycle units.

At this time, the units are to be built one at a time with the first unit at the Taconite, Minnesota Mesaba Energy Center I site. The current schedule calls for construction kick-off first quarter of 2008, and in-service date for the fall of 2011.

Fluor Corporation’s (NYSE:FLR ) (Irving, Texas) Aliso Viejo office has been selected to handle the engineering and construction of the first unit, with Siemens Power Generation (Orlando, Florida), a subsidiary of Siemens AG (NYSE:SI ) (Munich, Germany), to supply the combustion and steam turbine/generators.

According to Richard “Dick” Stone, Excelsior Energy Senior Vice President of Engineering and Construction, no engineering and construction contractors have been selected for Mesaba Energy Center II near Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota. At this time, the second unit is to follow the first unit by two years possibly Mesaba II.
