Mirant Zeeland Energy Phase II Prepares for Commercial Operation This Summer

Private Energy Producer (PEP) Mirant Corporation (NYSE: MIR) (Atlanta, Ga.) has begun final testing and check-out procedures for its Zeeland Energy power plant, located in southwestern Michigan. Zeeland Energy is an 848MW natural gas-fired power plant being constructed in two phases.

Phase I began commercial operation in June of 2001 and consists of two simple cycle combustion turbines to provide 300MW during hours of peak demand. Phase II is a 550 MW combined-cycle facility that utilizes GE Frame 7FA combustion turbines, heat recovery generators, and a steam turbine generator. The combined cycle plant will begin commercial operation this July and will operate during periods of base load and higher than average (intermediate load) demand. Kansas city based Burns & McDonnell is providing engineering, procurement, and construction services for the near $400 million project.

Mirant plans to sell the plant's capacity to customers in the East Central Area Reliability Council (ECAR) market through marketing agreements with Mirant Americas Energy Marketing.

Mirant was formed in April of 2001 by being spun off as a deregulated energy company from The Southern Companies. Mirant presently has 10,000 employees and over 21,500MW of generation with plans for an additional 7,900MW announced.
