Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The industrial sector of Missouri is quite varied, including everything from beef-processing plants to high-level defense technology projects. Industrial Info is tracking more than $6.5 billion of industrial projects presently under construction in the state.
What is easily the state's largest project is being built by The Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) (Arlington, Virginia) for the production of U.S. defense aircraft at the St. Louis Lambert International Airport. The project has been broken down into two components. Development of what is known as the Brownleigh Parcel entails demolishing existing buildings and constructing an 880,000-square-foot assembly building that will be used to manufacture advanced defense aircraft. The Northern Parcel will include other facilities, including a 185,000-square-foot hangar, a radar cross section test facility and auxiliary buildings. Work on the projects began earlier this year and is expected to be completed in 2026. Boeing said that it has drawn up tentative plans for a future expansion of the site, but additional construction remains contingent on incoming contracts and government needs. Another big project in the state is one of the largest beef-slaughtering projects in the U.S. American Foods Group LLC (AFG) (Green Bay, Wisconsin) broke ground on its grassroot beef-processing plant in Wright City in 2022. Upon completion, which is expected early next year, the approximately $800 million plant will be able to process 2,400 head of cattle per day and will add 1,300 jobs to the area. Other large projects underway include the first phase of a grassroot data center in Kansas City by Meta Platforms Incorporated (NASDAQ:META) (Menlo Park, California). Construction began in 2022 and entails building a 602,000-square-foot data center building that is expected to be completed by the end of this year. A second phase of construction would add a similarly sized building and could kick off in 2025, after Phase I has entered operations. The project at the moment also includes a possible third phase, which would add a third data hall and could potentially be completed by 2029. A project to increase production of a product found in many U.S. kitchens is underway in Saint Louis. Proctor & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) (P&G) (Cincinnati, Ohio) is adding a new production line for its Cascade dish detergent at its Saint Louis plant. In addition to other property improvements, P&G is installing 10 new baghouses in the Cascade production area and six new hygiene fans. The plant also manufactures Mr. Clean, Swiffer and Febreze products and is expected to add about 100 jobs once the expansion is completed. Another project extends beyond Minnesota's borders, but represents a significant amount of spending for the state. Tallgrass Energy Partners (Leawood, Kansas) is making its Rockies Express (REX) natural gas pipeline bidirectional. Although the company has completed some sections of the flow reversal, its work on Zone 2, which extends from Colorado to the city of Mexico, Missouri is still underway. The bidirectional flow of Zone 3, which extends from Mexico, Missouri, to Ohio already has been completed. Earlier this year, Tallgrass became 100% owner of REX when Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) (Houston, Texas) sold its 25% non-operated stake in the pipeline. The remaining Missouri portion of the project is expected to be completed by the end of this year. While the state's power projects are few and far between, Missouri's largest power project under construction points to a green future. Power giant AES Corporation (NYSE:AES) (Arlington, Virginia) is at work on a grassroot solar facility in Adair County, near Kirksville. Engineering, procurement and construction contractor Black & Veatch Incorporated (Overland Park, Kansas) kicked off construction of the Morris solar facility last year and is expected to wrap up the project next summer. The 250 megawatts of emissions-free generation that will come with the plant's completion will help AES meet its goal of having net-zero emissions from electricity sales by 2040.
